Foreword

Welcome to the 10th Reading University Graded Squash Tournament, an event that has become recognised as one of the best graded events in the country.

Again this year we have been supported by The Racket Shop and EZ-Leagues, allowing us to offer a great prize fund. Here at the university we are lucky to have the unrivalled support of the Sports Centre, the staff & in particular Iain Akhurst, Director of Sport. Without their help, understanding & commitment to squash we would not be able to hold this event.

Just like last year, the University Sports Centre only 4 squash courts, so our court time is limited by that. For this reason, we have decided to restrict the number of entries in each grade this year - to also ensure that we can allocate enough time on court for each match to be played.

Entries are limited to 16 players per grade on a first-come first-served basis.

Last year we accepted an extra 5 entries in the main grades, but we did not have any junior section. This year we are going to run a junior section on the Sunday, for 2 hours before the main grade finals. This means that we can not accept any extra players this year, we can only accept 64 players in total - so to ensure that your entry is accepted, posted it to us as soon as you can.

As entries are received, they will be entered here on the web site, so you will be able to see if you have made the cut.

The champions league system will be used for the tournament again.

If you have been part of our previous tournaments you’ll know what a great experience it is, competitive but with a fun friendly atmosphere. For those of you who are participating for the first time we trust you enjoy it as much as we enjoy putting them together.

Keep checking this web site for the latest news and details for the tournament.

We wish all players the best of luck, to have a great tournament and most of all - to enjoy the weekend.

Thank you, and hope to see you soon.
Yours,
John Walsh.
Tournament Co-ordinator.

Tournament Organisation and Rules

All Grades :-

The 'champions league' system will be used, which will ensure a minimum of 3 games for every player.

The 'champions league' system is :-
a first stage of 4 leagues, each of 4 players. Every player in a league plays every other player in their league. The winners of each league will go through into the semi-final rounds for their grade, followed by the grand final for the grade.
With 16 players in a grade, this gives 3 matches in the league stage, followed by the semis and finals.

For more details, see the 'draw and schedule' section.

League Scoring :-

Points are allocated as:
1 point for each game won,
1 bonus point for the winner of the match.

In the event of a tie in a league, the points against will decide the winner,
followed by the winner of the match between the tied players.

Rules for the weekend :-

  1. The winner of each match must referee or find a person to referee the next game on that court,
  2. Any player found not abiding by rule 1 will lose their £25 deposit,
  3. No player will be allowed to switch grades once the tournament has commenced,
  4. Players must be at the court and ready to play half an hour before their matches,
Note :- last year we had to award just 1 walkover because of a player being late, but we really do not want to have to do this.
  5. Tournament Referees decision is final.

Entry Fee

Player Fee
Senior £16
Student £11
Junior (under 18) £8

Important :- on top of the entry fee, these is also a seperate deposit of £25, which is fully refundable.

The deposit will be returned in the following circumstances :-

Note :- because the tournament does not use a knock-out system, we need all players to stay and complete their games, otherwise other players are left without an apponent to play and will miss-out on the games they expected to play. So the deposite is solely there to ensure that players stay around and complete their matches.

Please ensure that the deposit is made out by cheque and is separate to the entry payment, one cheque for both will NOT be accepted.

No entry will be accepted without a separate deposit.

Cheques should be made payable to “RU Squash Club”.
