Foreword
Welcome to the 9th Reading University Graded Squash Tournament, an event that has become recognised as one of the best graded events in the country.
Again this year we have been supported by The Racket Shop and EZ-Leagues, allowing us to offer a great prize fund. Here at the university we are lucky to have the unrivalled support of the Sports Centre, the staff & in particular Iain Akhurst, Director of Sport. Without their help, understanding & commitment to squash we would not be able to hold this event.
Due to the refurbishment & improvements currently being carried out at the University Sports Centre, we are down to only 4 squash courts (but at least they are the best of the 6 courts we had previously) being available. For this reason, we have decided to restrict the number of entries in each grade this year - to also ensure that we can allocate enough time on court for each match to be played. This has also ment that we have had to drop our junior grade for this year, although juniors are welcome to enter any of the main grades.
Entries are limited to 16 players per grade on a first-come first-served basis.
Last year we had 79 entries over the A-D grades and a few more juniors, but this year we can only accept 64 players in total - so to ensure that your entry is accepted, posted it to us as soon as you can.
As entries are received, they will be entered here on the web site, so you will be able to see if you have made the cut.
Poll :- we will use the champions league system for the tournament again, unless this is an unpopular format ? On the entry forms, you can give us some feedback as to which format you would prefer.
If you have been part of our previous tournaments you’ll know what a great experience it is, competitive but with a fun friendly atmosphere. For those of you who are participating for the first time we trust you enjoy it as much as we enjoy putting them together.
Keep checking this web site for the latest news and details for the tournament.
We wish all players the best of luck, to have a great tournament and most of all - to enjoy the weekend.
Thank you, and hope to see you soon.
Yours,
John Walsh.
Tournament Co-ordinator.

Tournament Organisation and Rules
All Grades :-
Either a 'champions league' or 'Monrad' system will be used, which will ensure a minimum of 3 or 4 games for every player.
As the organiser, I would prefer to use the champions league system, but we may switch to the Monrad system if a majority of players would prefer it.
A 'Monrad' system is :-
every player plays a match in every round (ie. you are never
eliminated from the tournament),
either moving up or down the rankings depending on your match result in each round.
With 16 players in a grade, this gives 4 rounds (matches) to be played.
A 'champions league' system is :-
a first stage of 4 leagues, where every player plays
every other player in their league.
The winners of each league will go through into the semi-final
rounds for their grade,
followed by the grand final for the grade.
With 16 players in a grade, this gives 3 matches in the league stage,
followed by the semis and finals.
For more details, see the 'draw and schedule' section.
League Scoring :-
Points are allocated as:
1 point for each game won,
1 bonus point for the winner of the match.
In the event of a tie in a league, the points against will decide
the winner,
followed by the winner of the match between the tied players.
Rules for the weekend :-
Entry Fee
Player | Fee |
---|---|
Senior | £15 |
Student | £10 |
Junior (under 15) | £7 |
Important :- on top of the entry fee, these is also a seperate deposit of £25, which is fully refundable.
The deposit will be returned in the following circumstances :-Note :- because the tournament does not use a knock-out system, we need all players to stay and complete their games, otherwise other players are left without an apponent to play and will miss-out on the games they expected to play. So the deposite is solely there to ensure that players stay around and complete their matches.
Please ensure that the deposit is made out by cheque and is separate to the entry payment, one cheque for both will NOT be accepted.
No entry will be accepted without a separate deposit.
Cheques should be made payable to “RU Squash Club”.
Grades
The University of Reading’s Graded Tournament is a mixed event.
We use the England Squash grading definitions :-
Prizes
Yes, thats right, we have great prizes for each grade. First and second places in every grade will receive a trophy and a cash prize (or equivalent) :-
Every entrant will also receive a free 'tournament T-shirt', which although it may not be a prize, will be something you can keep to help you remember the fantastic time you had at the 9th Reading University Graded Squash Tournament.
