Epilogue
First of all, thanks to all the players who entered the graded event and made it a great weekend of squash, again. This year saw 86 players (A 18, B 22, C 22, D 17, J 7) gather at the University of Reading sports centre for the event.
We had planned to use the Monrad system (rather than a knock-out) but changed to a four league qualifying stage with the winners going through into the semi-finals, due to the problem of having too many byes in the Monrad system (when you have an odd number of players).
The full draw, match schedule and results are available on-line and can be seen from the link at the bottom of this page.
The 'A' grade final (along with many other matches) is available on-line as video clips, see the link below. It was a great final between two players ranked well within the top 200 of the world! With both players working towards improving their PSA ranking, I'm looking forward to seeing them again next year.
Note :- they are large files and would not play very smoothly directly
from the internet, so it is best to save the clips to your PC first and
then watch them.
To download a clip, right-click on the file (to bring up a menu) and
choose 'Save Target As...', then choose where on your PC you want to
save the video file.
If you are (or recognise) any of the 'Unknown' players, please drop me an email and I will name your clip accordingly.
While you are on the web site, please take a minute to have a look through our sponsors links/web sites (which can be found at the bottom of this page) - after all, without them the event would not be what it is.
Click here for the movies page.
Thank you again, and hope to see you next year.
Yours,
John Walsh.
Tournament Co-ordinator.
Foreword
Welcome to the 8th Reading University Graded Squash Tournament. Yes, this is the eighth graded event & still going strong. Little did we know at the time when organising the first tournament attended by some 60 players that years later we would be so successful that the event would become recognised as one of the best graded events in the country.
Again this year we have been supported by The Racket Shop allowing us to offer a great prize fund and building upon last years introduction of a junior grade, this year we are running two age groups in the junior section, under 15’s & under 13’s.
Also new this year is our tournament team, headed up by our Tournament Co-ordinator John Walsh, who all have the ambition & drive to make the event even better than before, our thanks & best wishes to them.
Here at the university we are lucky to have the unrivalled support of the Sports Centre, the staff & in particular Iain Akhurst, Director of Sport. Without their help, understanding & commitment to squash we would not be able to hold this event. In the coming years the sport centre is to undergo some major refurbishment & improvements, although we are going to lose courts 5 & 6 we are very pleased that Iain has secured the development of one new glass back court next to courts 1 & 2, so when we see you next year we should have three glass back & two solid back courts.
If you have been part of our previous tournaments you’ll know what a great experience it is, competitive but with a fun friendly atmosphere. For those of you who are participating for the first time we trust you enjoy it as much as we enjoy putting them together.
We wish all players the best of luck, have a great tournament but most of all enjoy.

Tournament Organisation and Rules
Senior Grades :-
A 'champions league' system will be used this year, which we hope will give us better control over the matches to be played, and offer everyone a better weekend experience.
The first stage is a set of 4 leagues, where every player plays every other player in their league. The winners of each league will go through into the semi-final rounds for their grade. The A and B grades will have a 3rd/4th playoff match for the loosers of their semi-finals. The C and D grades will just have the 1st/2nd playoff match.
All matches are best of 5 games, American scoring, first to 11, no 2 points clear.
Juniors :-
A simple round-robin league system will be used, but with players classified by being under 15 or 13 years of age. When an U13 player is against an U15 player, the U13 player will start on +4 point.
All matches are best of 3 games, American scoring, first to 11, no 2 points clear.
League Scoring :-
Points are allocated as:
1 point for each game won,
1 bonus point for the winner of the match.
In the event of a tie in a league, the points against will decide the winner.
Rules for the weekend :-
Entry Fee
Class | Fee |
---|---|
Wolfenden Sports Centre Member | £14 |
None Member | £16 |
Student | £12 |
Junior | £5 |
Important :- on top of the entry fee, these is also a seperate deposit of £25, which is fully refundable.
The deposit will be returned in the following circumstances :-Note :- because the tournament does not use a knock-out system, we need all players to stay and complete their games, otherwise other players are left without an apponent to play and will miss-out on the games they expected to play. So the deposite is solely there to ensure that players stay around and complete their matches.
Please ensure that the deposit is made out by cheque and is separate to the entry payment, one cheque for both will NOT be accepted.
No entry will be accepted without a separate deposit.
Cheques should be made payable to “RU Squash Club”.
