A small collection of example situations, movement (ie. court coverage) and shot making. Definitions ----------- nick = the edge/join between the floor and a wall. good length (straight or cross-court) = first bounce around the back of the service box. measure of quality for any shot = the second bounce at the nick. ---- Example Videos -------------- * backhand_corner_1.avi Some good examples of getting the ball out of the backhand corner, by both players, but RED is the better one to watch. Look for feet positioning, which leads the body into a good position, allowing for a good swing... ---- * backhand_footwork_1.avi A good example of making the effort to get correct feet positioning on the backhand. PURPLE = good effort. RED = poor effort. Guess who wins the ralley ? ---- * court_coverage_1.avi RED goes for a kill, but misses it and gets himself trapped in the front right corner, giving BLUE an easy drive to the back left. BLUE does not get a perfect length and RED is able to cover the full diagonal of the court and run the ball down, keeping him in the ralley. ---- * court_coverage_2.avi PURPLE gets himself trapped on the left side while RED plays the ball cross-court, but PURPLE moves fast to cover the court and retrieves the ball. ---- * drives_1.avi Watch for the first bounce of the ball for any drive - straight or cross-court. The first bounce is around the back of the service box. Any shorter and the ball is cut off in the mid-court. Any longer, and with the ball as hot as it is and being struck as hard as they are hitting, it would bounce back off the back wall too much and not move the player away from the mid-court. ---- * forehand_corner_1.avi Most rear corner forehands are played with their right foot forward, but there are a couple of deeper shots where each player has to turn fully to get their body facing the back corner in order to play the ball. And see how PURPLE bends his knees to get low down to play the ball (because it is low too). ---- * length_1.avi A long ralley is finally won with a good length - the second bounce of the ball at the back wall nick. ---- * rear_foot_1.avi Illustration of movement - shrinking the court. Imagine the inner edges of the service boxes extended the whole length of the court, front to back, making a central corridor. In trying to keep yourself as close to the T as you can, try keeping your trailing foot/leg inside this 'central corridor' at all times. Both players do it very well in this ralley. ---- * stroke_1.avi sin - to have the advantage and give away a stroke. Player A hits 2 good shots to the back corners, putting player B under pressure and drawing out loose shots, gets a middle-court ball, but then plays a shot with no width and gives away a stroke point. ----
